Fungal Diseases in Plants and Crops

Fungal Diseases in Plants and Crops

Where do the fungi come from? Let us see some of the common sources of fungal infections; they are infected seed, soil, crop debris, nearby crops and weeds. Fungi are spread by wind and water splash, and through the movement of contaminated soil, animals, workers, machinery, tools, seedlings and other plant material. Plant fungus can quickly damage and even kill plants. Some come through the air via spores and attach onto the plant’s leaves. Other types live in the soil and can enter a plant through the roots. Root-based fungi can kill the roots or block the water-conducting cells, causing the plant to wilt and eventually die.

Leaf spots (other names: anthracnose, scab, leaf blotch, shot hole) are usually rather definite spots of varying sizes, shapes and colors. Leaf Blights, Rusts, Powdery Mildew, Downy Mildew are some of the fungal diseases found in plants/crops. Some of the most rampant fungal diseases that occur on vegetables are Anthracnose, Botrytis rot, Downy mildew, Fusarium rot, Powdery mildew, Rust, Rhizoctonia rot, Sclerotia rot, and Sclerotium rot.

The fungal diseases can be prevented by some of these mechanisms; Make sure your plant has plenty of air circulation around it. Adjust your watering habits to avoid overwatering. Water your houseplants in the morning rather than evening. Make sure your planter has proper drainage so that your plant doesn’t get waterlogged. In case of plants remember to “water the pot, not the plant!” Pouring the water over the soil of the pot instead of the leaves and foliage of the plants will help prevent fungus spots and wasted water.

Neem oil preparations, citronella, geranium, lemongrass, eucalyptus, and peppermint, among others, have been found beneficial in preventing or curing the harmful effects due to different types of fungal diseases. Tea tree oil is another essential oil that has demonstrated antifungal capabilities. Intercropping and crop rotation may also be beneficial in preventing fungal diseases from occurring.
