Avoid Air & Sound Pollution during this Diwali

“Diwali” the most awaited festival has already arrived.  Due to pandemic last year it was not celebrated on a larger scale, but this year there seems to be lot of enthusiasm in the public for celebrating it on a grand scale.  While doing this we need to exercise some restraint in regards to the usage of crackers.

“Flowerpot, ground spinner, snake tablets, string, sparklers and series or garlands of bursting crackers are the six most polluting firecrackers.Crackers create high decibel sound and most people feel numbness in the ears after bursting crackers. It can also lead to deafness. Sulfur Dioxide, Nitrous Oxides and many other harmful gases are released because of crackers causing respiratory problems and diseases. We definitely don’t want to inhale them.

In the normal course for those with lung or heart conditions, the crackers can cause breathing problems, wheezing and tightness in the chest. Additionally, air pollution due to firecrackers can worsen the symptoms of asthma, COPD and lead to respiratory infections and premature deaths.  This has to be kept in mind at all times as the world has witnessed the devastating effects due to Covid.  Crackers create high decibel sound and most people feel numbness in the ears after bursting crackers.  It can also lead to deafness.  In addition, Sulfur Dioxide, Nitrous Oxides and many other harmful gases are released because of crackers.We definitely don’t want to inhale them.

Many states this year are exercising extra caution and have banned firecrackers. Here’s a list of states which have taken strict measures to bring air pollution under control. (New Delhi, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh)

Promote the use of the “environmentally-friendly” firecrackers that include flower pots and sparklers carry a green logo and a QR code.  Once you scan the code you can see which chemicals make up the cracker.  Let us take the pledge to keep our “Mother Earth” clean and green.  We also should not miss this opportunity to take the pledge to protect our “Mother Earth” from the hazardous effects of chemical pesticides and promote the use or Organic Inputs for the betterment of mankind.
